Moka Pot Brewing Guide

For those who enjoy bold, concentrated coffee, the moka pot is a beloved Italian classic. Invented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933, it makes a strong brew often described as “stovetop espresso”, perfect with milk or straight.

What makes it special?

Steam pressure pushes water through finely ground coffee, resulting in a deep, syrupy extraction. It’s not true espresso, but it’s the closest thing you’ll get without an expensive machine.

How to Brew (2–3 cups)

You’ll need:

  • 17–18g fine-ground coffee
  • Hot water
  • Moka pot

Steps:

  1. Fill the bottom chamber with hot water (up to the valve).
  2. Add coffee to the basket. Level it off but don’t tamp.
  3. Assemble and place over medium heat.
  4. Brew takes 3–5 minutes. When you hear gurgling, it’s ready.
  5. Remove immediately and serve.

Tip

To avoid a burnt taste, pre-heat your water and cool the bottom chamber after brewing to stop over-extraction.
