French Press Brewing Guide

Also known as a cafetière, this method has stood the test of time. It's easy to use, requires minimal equipment, and produces a rich, deeply textured cup. If you enjoy coffees with chocolate, nutty, or earthy notes, this is your go-to brew.

What makes it special?

Immersion brewing allows for full extraction of oils and soluble compounds, resulting in a heavier body. Unlike paper-filtered brews, French press coffee retains more of the coffee’s natural mouthfeel.

How to Brew (2 cups)

You’ll need:

  • 30g coarse ground coffee
  • 500ml water (just off boil)
  • French Press
  • Scale + timer

Steps:

  1. Add coffee to your French press.
  2. Pour in all the water and start your timer.
  3. Stir to break up the crust.
  4. Place lid on but do not plunge.
  5. At 4 minutes, press down slowly.
  6. Pour immediately to avoid bitterness.

Tip

If you want a cleaner cup, skim off the top foam before plunging, it helps reduce
sediment.

Curiosity

The French Press was patented in 1929 but was actually invented by an Italian. It remains one of the most used methods in European households today.
