AeroPress Brewing Guide

The AeroPress is a modern brewing icon. Invented by Alan Adler in 2005, it’s loved for its versatility, portability, and its ability to make both strong, espresso-style coffee and clean filter brews, all with minimal fuss. Whether you’re camping, travelling, or brewing at your kitchen counter, this little brewer delivers big results.

What makes it special?

The AeroPress uses gentle air pressure to extract flavours, giving you a smooth, rich cup without bitterness or high acidity. Its short brew time also reduces over-extraction, making it ideal for experimenting with different grinds, water temps, and recipes.

How to Brew (Inverted Method)

You’ll need:

  • 14g medium-fine ground coffee
  • 230g water just off the boil (around 94–96°C)
  • AeroPress + filter
  • Scale + timer

Steps:

  1. Insert the plunger slightly into the AeroPress chamber (inverted position).
  2. Place filter paper in the cap and rinse with hot water.
  3. Add coffee, tare the scale.
  4. Start timer, pour in 60g of water. Stir gently.
  5. At 30 seconds, add remaining 170g.
  6. Brew for a total of 3 minutes.
  7. Screw on the cap, flip, and press gently into a mug.
  8. Brew should finish in around 2:30–3:00 minutes.

Tip

Use a paper filter for a cleaner cup. Don’t rush the press, gentle pressure gives better flavour clarity.

Curiosity

Many AeroPress World Championship winners brew using the inverted method, it gives more control over steep time and clarity!
